Why do we have volunteers?
Taranaki DHB supports opportunities for volunteering as this promotes good health and emotional well being, sustains and strengthens values of the community - caring and sharing.
Volunteering provides an opportunity for members of our community to give back to their community, and through their own skills and experience assist the quality of service provided.
Volunteers do not replace professional services but through their time, skills and personal interests, they bring an additional dimension to the comfort and welfare of patients and visitors.

How do I become a volunteer at Taranaki DHB?
This is an easy process as all you need to do is to contact the volunteer coordinator detailed below to discuss how you can assist. You will likely be required to:
- Complete relevant application documentation
- Be interviewed as it is important to ensure we are recruiting the right type of volunteer to meet the needs of the organisation, and ensure our patients and visitors are safe
- Complete a pre-appointment health questionnaire, nominate referees and agree to a police vetting check.
The time commitment required of you in a volunteer capacity is entirely up to you. Some areas will have set times and hours for specific activity that we look to fill at all times however we are most grateful for the time you can give.
What training an orientation will I receive?
Prior to commencing at Taranaki DHB you will be invited to participate in the Taranaki DHB organisational induction and orientation programme delivered fortnightly on a Monday morning, 8.00 – 9.30 a.m. This training will cover fire safety – emergency procedures, and Maori Health. You will then be orientated into your position by the volunteer coordinator or another volunteer.
There are a number of opportunities across the DHB that may be of interest to you.
Meet and Greet
Meet and Greet volunteers were introduced to Base Hospital in 2010 and are recognisable by their “Blue Coats”, as they are affectionately known. The primary purpose is to provide a front of house meet and greet service for patients on behalf of the Taranaki District Health Board. You will likely see Meet and Greet volunteers at the main entrance to the wards and the corporate / maternity entrance.

Friends of the Emergency Department
St Johns Friends of the Emergency Department volunteers (FEDs) give their time and care so that people in distress can receive comfort when they really need it. FEDs generally work a four hour shift once a week or fortnight and some of the tasks they carry out are:
- Sitting with, listening to and talking with patients
- Assisting relatives and supporting them if necessary
- Helping out with the delivery of meals and cups of tea
- Above all, being a friend

NZ Red Cross
The main tasks of Red Cross volunteers are the Meals on Wheels, Trolley services and Community Transport.
Meals on Wheels support elderly, ill and disabled people living at home who would otherwise struggle to provide healthy meals for themselves. This service also provides a moment of social contact and a ‘check in’ from the outside world.
The Trolley service delivers books and magazines to read throughout the hospital. The service also provides a much needed visit and chat to patients who may not receive any outside visitors during their stay.
NZ Red Cross also provide community transport to people who do not have any other means of getting to their medical appointments and are not in the position to catch taxi/public transport.

Assisting the Play Specialist
Working under the direction of the Play Specialist the volunteer will assist to provide play and recreation to children / young people and their families / whanau. Patient care and customer service is critical in this role. You should have experience of working with children and their families / whanau.

The Chaplaincy service contributes to the health and welfare of patients, family members and staff by providing pastoral and spiritual care. The chaplain at Base Hospital is available 24-hours-a-day and is supported by a team of trained volunteer chaplaincy assistants. Chaplaincy assistants work under the guidance of our hospital chaplains providing pastoral care to patients in wards and departments.

Medical Records volunteers work in the filing areas of the departments and assist staff with filing backlogs and other administrative tasks. This could be photocopying, culling old records and delivering files to parts of the hospital.
